Sydney to Adelaide road trip highlights

Sydney to Adelaide road trip highlights

I can’t believe it been already a month since we got back from our road trip… In June I travelled with my furry sidekick Ollie to Adelaide and checked out many beautiful and dog friendly places. I also ticked a few photo spots of my bucket list. Hopefully I’ll be able to go to Adelaide again in the future to have a few sessions with my clients as well. South Australia is just gorgeous and I’d love to share a few highlights from my trip with you.

Canberra

James Turrell “Within Without” art installation is a must see. It is located on the outside of the National Gallery of Australia and guess what, it is dog friendly! The stupa made of Victorian basalt is surrounded by soft ochre walls and turquoise water. Perfect reflections and complimentary colours look amazing on photos, so don’t forget to get a photo of your dog there as well.

Mount Majura Nature Reserve is part of the Canberra Nature Park, and is located in north Canberra. Many walking trails and roads provide amazing opportunities to explore the reserve with a dog (or on a horse back). We enjoyed an early morning loop in a park, which was very quiet at sunrise… Kangaroos were the only friends we made on our walk.

Isaacs Ridge Nature Reserve is another great place to take your dog for a walkie. You can choose between gorgeous trails shared with mtb or just walk on the fire trail.

    Albury

Huon Hill Parklands is a great place if you are ready for a little (a bit over 200m) hike with your dog. The wide range of walks at Huon Hill offer spectacular views of Lake Hume, the Kiewa Valley, the Alpine Region, Murray and Kiewa Rivers, and Albury and Wodonga cities.

      Narrandera

After you check out Narrandera Water Tower Art, make sure you go to the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve for a walk. When you stroll along the Murrumbidgee River, you can spot many cute koalas.

      Lake Bonney

Lake Bonney was on my photo bucket list for a while now. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a nice weather when we were there. I definitely plan to go back there for a sunset session to capture this iconic Aussie location at its finest.

      Adelaide

      • Bumbunga Lake

It is one of the many pink lakes in South Australia and is located only 1.5h drive from Adelaide. This lake is known to change colour from pink, to white, to blue, depending on the salinity of the water throughout the year. We were very lucky to see it in pink. We saw a few pink lakes during our trip, but this was my favourite😊

      • Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village

It is another great place to visit with a dog. Old Tailem Town Pioneed Village is the Australia’s largest pioneer village, located 1h drive from Adelaide. You can explore the village with your dog and see what life was like for the settlers of South Australia from 1860 – 1960. There are over 100 buildings for you to check out and for your best furiend to sniff.

      • Hex’d on Murray dog friendly accommodation

Oh my, it is so dreamy, that I couldn’t recommend it more. Based right on the Murray River, this tiny, floating home offers gorgeous views in a very peaceful setting. I loved waking up to the sound of the birds and hanging out on a deck. Hex’d is also only a short drive from nice dog friendly attractions: Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village and Kinchina Conservation Park.

      • Maslin Beach and Blanche Point

Gorgeous dog friendly beach with an off-leash area. We went there mostly for the red cliff views on the southern end of the beach. It is very photogenic and I’d love to have full session here one day.

      • Semaphore Beach in Adelaide

This beach has something that I’m missing in Sydney a lot… A gorgeous old wooden pier! The Semaphore Jetty was completed in 1860, but it changed a lot since then. It still looks amazing on the photos and I’m very glad we visited this beach.

It is a dog friendly National Park in Adelaide – do I even need to say more? Many beautiful trails of different lengths and difficulty, lots of wildlife incl. koalas and kangaroos. True paradise for outdoors lovers!

If you have any questions regarding traveling with dogs to any of the listed above spots, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always happy to share my experiences with fellow doggie travellers. Keep exploring!
